Photography

Photography is an important part of this site. Every article is illustrated with pictures of the development, area or other images that add context to the subject under discussion.

Most of the photographs on this site are taken on black and white film. There are two reasons for this.

The first is that I like the look and feel of film.

The second is artistic.

So much of the internet today is filled with sites that focus on volume. They provide instant reaction to ongoing events and fast news updates. The product is shallow analysis and news articles that do little more than reprint press releases. The approach to imagery is similarly thoughtless, with the author often using pictures they can find for free online.

Sites like that have their place, and are useful sources of information as far as they go, but this one seeks to go beyond that. OurCity.London invests time and effort in our articles, providing thoroughly researched writing that we hope gives a unique insight into the city. Complimenting those articles with a set of unique images using a chemical process that takes hours to complete, rather than the milliseconds of a digital image, reminds us of the importance of taking our time.

Below are a selection of images from OurCity.London. For more photos from the project go to the ourcity.london album on Flickr
