I am an investigative journalist based in London.
My main interest is the economy and the relationship between politics, culture and economics.
The worlds of business and economics are often shrouded in complexity which creates the impression that the subject is inaccessible. That in itself is damaging.
We all participate in the economy; it is fundamental to our society and how we relate to each other. It is vital that the economy and the worlds of finance and business are understood by as many people as possible. This should not be an impossible task.
Behind every economic transaction there is a human relationship. Decisions made in the marketplace, and the reasoning behind them, are as political, emotional and fallible as any other decisions taken by humans and are therefore capable of being understood by them.
My goal is to try to understand how the economy really works, why important economic decisions are taken and by whom. This website is a living archive of my work and other activities.
Campaigning
The purpose of an investigative journalist should be to get as close as possible to the truth. To understanding why things happen, what the impacts are, who wins and who loses.
That truth can be a powerful thing once it is obtained, especially if it is not widely known. For that reason it is often simply not possible for the investigative journalist to write their articles or reports and leave it there. Many go on to campaign on and advocate for the issues that they have been researching.
I see no problem with this. Good quality journalism should be about holding people to account and providing the information and evidence to ensure that a democratic society makes well-informed choices.
To achieve this, often a journalist will have to take what they have learned and campaign for a better understanding of an issue. The most important condition is that the learning must not come with a preconceived agenda. An objective search for the truth must come first.
